Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells, Swindon, UK, won a Gold Award in the 2009 RoSPA awards.

Any injury is an unacceptable price to pay for the operation of our sites – at Johnson Matthey our target is zero accidents.

During the year, our platinum group metal refining operations at Brimsdown in the UK achieved an award from the Chemical Industries Association (CIA) for its performance in reducing lost time accidents over a three year period from 2005 to 2007.

This outstanding performance in an intrinsically hazardous business was hard won. It was achieved by a combination of tools and tactics which included a computer based accident reporting and action management system, team involvement and new site procedures, training courses and health and safety forums. It was the result of considerable effort in developing an enhanced health and safety culture which gained momentum, year on year. This improvement in performance has continued during 2008 as the site strives for continual reduction in accident levels and our Sustainability 2017 goals.

Meanwhile, Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells in Swindon, UK, won a Silver Award for Occupational Health and Safety from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for the third year in succession.

The RoSPA awards – highly prestigious and well recognised awards within industry – are not just about reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill health at work; they are also about ensuring that organisations have good health and safety management systems in place.

They help to reinforce the message that good health and safety is good business and clearly demonstrate an organisation’s commitment to the achievement of high levels of performance in this crucial area.

“Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells have demonstrated how seriously they take health and safety management and are a fine example to many other companies,” said David Rawlins, RoSPA Awards Manager.

But the success doesn’t end there. Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells has now struck gold for its achievements in workplace safety, winning a Gold Award in the 2009 RoSPA awards.

Excellence in health and safety is an important sustainability goal for us and we strive for continuous improvement. External recognition for our sites’ achievements acknowledges the hard work and commitment of everyone involved in creating a healthier and safer workplace.
