Executive Summary
Communication with the group’s wide range of stakeholders is also described. Specific activities during the year are highlighted, including details of a stakeholder survey which was commissioned to help define the structure of this and future reports.
The commitment of employees to our goals is vital in making Sustainability 2017 a success and employee engagement has remained a key priority to give staff a clear view of the importance of sustainability to the overall business strategy and to equip them with the information they need to take forward their own sustainability ideas. Training, communication and progress updates have also continued this year. Feedback from employees on Sustainability 2017 is an important aspect in directing what we do and following suggestions from staff, a dedicated sustainability intranet site was launched during the year. As well as providing a means for sharing good practice on sustainability, the intranet provides an additional channel for feeding back ideas. The report also includes a Q&A section which captures the thoughts and views on sustainability of eight of Johnson Matthey’s employees.
Key human capital metrics are presented, including those on employee numbers, gender, turnover, trade union representation, training and sickness absence. Developments in the year, such as a new initiative to increase awareness of the importance of creating an enhanced environment for the development of women in management, are described.
Johnson Matthey’s involvement in a wide range of community investment programmes worldwide has continued this year. A variety of community investment metrics are included in the report together with examples of some of the projects we are supporting.
Protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees has always been a key priority in Johnson Matthey and it is their contribution that will underpin the growth of our business in the years ahead. In July 2009, however, an employee of a contractor company who was engaged in work at Johnson Matthey’s catalyst manufacturing site in Taloja, India received a severe electric shock while carrying out work at the site. Regrettably, despite hospital treatment, his life could not be saved.
The report includes detailed accident statistics and describes health and safety initiatives during the year. In 2008/09 we saw a disappointing increase in our lost time accident rate and this year we have taken action to revitalise our accident prevention processes. As a result, the rate of occupational accidents involving lost time has fallen to its lowest reported level. For Johnson Matthey, any accident is unacceptable and we continue to work towards our target of zero accidents. We have also introduced a group target to reduce the incidence of occupational illness cases by at least 30% by 2013/14 to support and promote a healthier working environment.
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we appreciate that all the chemicals we use must be managed responsibly. Details of our product stewardship systems, performance and regulatory matters which affect the group (such as REACH) are included in the report.
Sustainability 2017 has also delivered steady improvement in environmental performance with year on year reductions against four of our five environment related Sustainability 2017 targets and reductions in all but two of the group’s other seven reported environmental metrics. These improvements have been achieved despite the inclusion of data from three major new manufacturing facilities this year.
Sustainability remains an important driver for future growth for Johnson Matthey and steady progress has continued in 2009/10. As the journey to 2017 continues, the focus is on accelerating performance towards the Sustainability 2017 targets through identifying and delivering operational improvements that enhance our resource efficiency and by developing new sustainable products and technologies for our customers.
