Opportunities in Development and Production

Development forms the cutting edge of our business. We work in teams with our customers to transform ideas into commercial reality.

We aim to grow our business by developing new products, many of them based on projects from the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre at Sonning Common. We also assess existing products and processes in order to improve and streamline them. Speed to market is key and our work is challenging. It is satisfying to work on a product today and see it being sold 3-6 months later. We develop strong partnerships directly with customers – getting their research and development people to buy into our ideas. That way we build the long-term relationships essential to our business.

How you start out

You'll start on a live project straightaway. You could be exploring a new opportunity with a customer, busy doing benchwork related to a customer programme or working on an internal production project. You could be running tests, analysing customer returns or scaling up production on a new product.

Who are we looking for?

There are opportunities for first-degree graduates and PhDs. We look for people with relevant technical knowledge who are from the business world and those keen to join.

We seek those with chemistry degrees including specialists in catalysis. We also recruit chemical engineers for process technology and automotive engineers for autocatalyst testing. You'll need to communicate effectively in both technical and layman's terms and be a practical self-starter.

Development and production checklist

Degree and other skills: Training:
  • Chemistry and related degrees
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Automotive and Mechanical Engineering
Vocational training, for example catalysis courses, instrumental techniques and experimental design, runs alongside the Business Training Programme. We ensure that chemists and chemical engineers understand each other's disciplines so they work effectively together. We strongly encourage and support chemical engineers to gain chartered status with the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
