Bill Cotton Bill Cotton 187x154.jpg(right),Chemical Engineer, Loughborough University. Joined ICI in 1991. Based in Billingham, Cleveland, UK.

I joined ICI as a Process Engineer supporting catalyst sales and licensing activities around the world and the ICI business I worked for was acquired by Johnson Matthey in 2002. During my career, I had ample opportunity to meet customers either in our offices, at conferences and by visiting their sites. This allowed me to apply my theoretical chemical engineering knowledge and develop a practical understanding of how plants operate.

I then spent four months commissioning a methanol plant in Melbourne where I learned how to work with operators in a pressurised environment.

The next major step in my career was a two year secondment working for a key customer in New Zealand, working on three methanol plants as a plant support engineer. Not only was this a major life style change but the work I did was very challenging.

I then managed two teams of process engineers, providing direct customer support and I was responsible for ensuing work was correctly completed and more importantly development of team members.

My present role involves me looking at projects to improve our customers plants. As such I prepare proposals, perform studies with our engineering partners and develop technologies. I also manage the development and mentoring programme for new process engineers entering the business.

Thoughts on Johnson Matthey

I have had a very varied career within Johnson Matthey and have many opportunities to see customers, travel the world and used my skills to help our customers and people within the business. One of most enjoyable parts of working in Johnson Matthey is the people - they are all very friendly and always willing to help and this is the main reason I enjoy my work.
