Overview

'The company invests considerable sums to develop you, and it's worth persevering to achieve the levels of responsibility you want. '
Sabine Stanley, Business Studies and Modern Languages (English & Spanish), Giessen University, Germany. Joined in October 1994 in sales and marketing in Catalysts & Chemicals Division.

'My first role was a technical one within sales and marketing - which meant learning fast and getting responsibility early on.

I became interested in HR when an opportunity came up to assist the European HR Manager. I understudied the HR Manager in recruitment, training, payroll and pension administration. It was a massive learning curve, as I had to stand in for my boss for a while.

I quickly had the opportunity of increasing my responsibility in a Group HR role. As well as being responsible for the needs of 60 people at the Company's Head Office, I was involved in lots of group-wide initiatives - graduate recruitment, share schemes, private medical schemes and bonus plans.

After some time at Head Office, I was promoted to be the HR Manager for the Precious Metals Division where I look after all aspects of HR for over 300 people together with my small HR team. There are so many different aspects to the job - I don't think I've ever been bored. Working as part of a management team has been a great experience and an opportunity to learn about the business. On top of that, the people here are very supportive, friendly and fun.

It's been good to get the training I needed to succeed in my job. It is down to you to say what you need to make it happen - a professional qualification, management development or the opportunity to work on interesting projects. The company invests considerable sums to develop you, and it's worth persevering to achieve the levels of responsibility you want. '
