A major part of the Johnson
Matthey energy efficiency programme saw the installation of Combined
Heat and Power (CHP) plants at our Royston and Brimsdown sites with
a total electrical capacity of 10MW.These units, powered by natural
gas, produce electricity, hot water and steam at over 85% efficiency.
This form of distributed power generation compares favourably with
centralised generation supplied through the national grid at an efficiency
of around 35%, thus reducing costs and emissions to the environment.
The steam and hot water generated by the CHP plants is used elsewhere
on the plants to provide heat for other processes. Plans are now
in place to make similar investments at other plants around the world.
The next site expected to be powered by CHP is likely to be West
Deptford in the United States.
