We
are pleased to present this review which covers our environmental
performance and social and economic contribution to sustainable
development in the year. We have chosen to present this on the
Internet as the most convenient way of reaching not just our
shareholders, but the many other interest groups who wish to
have an understanding of the products we make and the way that
our business is managed.
We believe that Johnson Matthey is
making, and will continue to make, a significant contribution to
sustainable development through the application of its leading
technology, the ingenuity of its people and by the generation
of profits. Many of our products make a particularly positive social
and environmental contribution. They range from anticancer compounds
to our autocatalyst technologies which improve air quality around
the world.
As the world grapples with climate change there is
a consensus that we must make better use of our existing energy
sources through
greater energy efficiency in the transition to a low carbon world.
This will not be done quickly but moving to hydrogen as a key
energy carrier is an important step in harnessing the elegance
and efficiency
of fuel cells for clean power generation. With our core competence
in catalysis and precious metals technology Johnson Matthey is
ideally placed to contribute to the solution and benefit from an
important new business opportunity.
Whilst Johnson Matthey’s main contribution
to sustainable development will be through the excellence of
our products we are
also proud of the way that that the company is managed, an area
in which we aim to achieve the highest standards. With this report
we seek to broaden understanding of our business through voluntary
disclosure.
The information presented in this review covers
the financial year from April 2002 to March 2003. Environmental
data is presented
for the 2002 calendar year.
The policies and management systems described cover all Johnson
Matthey operated facilities. The data presented covers all manufacturing
and research and development sites.
We hope you find this review of interest and would be pleased
to receive any comments that you may have on its content.
