Health and Safety Performance

Group Health and Safety performance has improved steadily since 1999. This is the result of a number of initiatives introduced during the period. Our accident rate is below UK industry averages for the sectors in which we operate.

Group wide initiatives continue to focus on making substantial, measurable improvements. An initiative was launched in 2001 to improve the robustness of risk assessment across the group. The programme to improve risk assessment and the associated control measures is ongoing.

Accidents are actively monitored and detailed statistics are compiled monthly. The majority of accidents result from manual handling (29% of all accidents) with the most common form of injury being to the back (21% of all injuries). These problems are being addressed through training, auditing and changes to operating procedures and processes.

There have been no fatalities.

Occupational Health

The primary objective of Johnson Matthey's occupational health programme is to identify health risks at an early stage to avoid long term health effects. Our production sites have occupational health surveillance programmes overseen by the group Occupational Physician. Larger sites have their own health centres staffed by qualified occupational health nurses and physicians.

Johnson Matthey does not carry out any medical screening of employees that could be considered discriminatory e.g. pregnancy, HIV or genetic screening.
