Charitable Donations

Johnson Matthey has a long history of support for charitable causes dating back to the early years of the 19th century when Percival Norton Johnson established his business in Hatton Garden. The company’s support for the Royal London Society for the Blind dates back to the society’s foundation in 1838 when Elizabeth Lydia Johnson, wife of Percival Norton Johnson, was its first secretary. This association continues to this day, with support for the work of the Royal London Society for the Blind one of the elements of the company’s active and wide ranging charitable donations programme.

In the financial year to 31st March 2003 Johnson Matthey donated £323,000 to charitable organisations. These figures only include donations made by Johnson Matthey and do not include payroll giving, donations made by staff or employee time. The company made no political donations in the year.

Johnson Matthey’s charitable donations programme encompasses medical research, education, care for the disabled and young people's charities as well as a number of worldwide community action programmes. The company also has a very active charity of the year programme under which a good cause is chosen to be the special focus of Johnson Matthey’s charitable activities for one financial year. This programme was established in 1993 to encourage employees at all levels to become involved in fund raising initiatives in support of a good cause. Former charities of the year have included Macmillan Cancer Relief, The British Lung Foundation and in 2001/02 the NSPCC. Our current charity of the year is Diabetes UK.

The administration of Johnson Matthey corporate charitable donations is overseen by a committee of senior executives which is chaired by a board director. The Chief Executive’s Committee and the Audit Committee review the group charitable donations annually.

It awards annual scholarships to students studying to degree level in scientific or technical subjects in the UK where the student is the son or daughter of a Johnson Matthey employee, or connected to the precious metal industry. Typically 60 students receive awards per year through the Educational Trust.
