Environmental Catalysts and Technologies

For more than 25 years Johnson Matthey’s products have been used to tackle pollution from vehicles and industrial sources. We pioneered the application of catalysts in controlling emissions from both petrol and diesel engine vehicles and industrial processes, twice winning the MacRobert Award for innovation.

Johnson Matthey autocatalyst manufacturing sites are located in the US, UK, Belgium, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Malaysia, China and India. The Division also has research, development and testing facilities in UK, US, Japan, Brazil and Sweden.

In March 2001 Johnson Matthey officially opened its £10 million European autocatalyst manufacturing facility in Royston, UK. The 6,000 m2 building uses state of the art manufacturing technology to produce innovative emission control catalysts.

Fuel Cells

Johnson Matthey is a leading supplier of platinum catalysts and catalysed components at the heart of the fuel cell. Fuel cells are a highly efficient and clean technology for mobile and stationary power generation.

Our fuel cell testing and evaluation facilities at the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre in the UK and West Whiteland, Pennsylvania in the US work closely with our customers and suppliers. These facilities have achieved good progress in fuel cell design and the development of robust manufacturing processes. We have recently completed the first phase of our dedicated membrane electrode assembly manufacturing facility at Swindon in the UK. This will enable phased expansion to meet market demand and position Johnson Matthey as a leading supplier of fuel cell components.
