Johnson Matthey's Pharmaceutical Materials Division is a global, integrated supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients. It supplies services to pharmaceutical companies through every phase of the development of a new product. Pharm-Eco Laboratories provides contract research and development services from pre-clinical through to Phase Three clinical trials. Serving their respective, highly controlled markets in the US and Europe, at West Deptford in the US and Macfarlan Smith in the UK work with customers from Phase Three clinical trials through to bulk manufacturing of a patented or generic drug.

Pharmaceutical Materials produces active pharmaceutical ingredients for leading pharmaceutical companies. We work in partnership with our customers to develop and manufacture drugs, such as the platinum based anti cancer drug, carboplatin, and a growing range of generic controlled substances. Research and development activities examine novel and efficient synthesis of pharmaceutical materials.

The manufacture and distribution of these drugs are strictly controlled by regulatory authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration and Drug Enforcement Administration in the United States. Major products include the powerful painkillers hydromorphone, oxycodone and fentanyl and drugs for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Their manufacture requires competencies central to Johnson Matthey, high security of manufacturing and total materials control.
