Cookson Matthey Ceramics Wins Major Environmental Award

Cookson Matthey Ceramics plc ("CMC"), the ceramics supplies joint venture owned 50:50 by Cookson Group plc and Johnson Matthey PLC, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Major Commendation in the 1995 Business Commitment to the Environment Awards. The award was presented to the company by The Rt Hon Virginia Bottomley, JP, MP, Secretary of State for National Heritage, at a ceremony in London today.

CMC's award is in recognition of the company's global Decorative Ceramics business's commitment to the removal of lead from its products and processes. Lead has traditionally been used in ceramic glazes and colours for decorative purposes and to provide important physical characteristics such as resistance to abrasion and chemical attack. Achieving these properties with lead free products has presented a number of tough technical challenges but CMC has succeeded in producing highly successful ranges of tableware glazes, enamels for toughened glass and decorative onglaze and inglaze enamels. These products offer major environment, health and safety benefits to CMC's customers and in the company's manufacturing processes.

Commenting on the award, Chris Clark, Chief Executive of Cookson Matthey Ceramics, said:

"I am delighted that Cookson Matthey Ceramics' pioneering work in the field of lead free products and manufacturing processes for the ceramics industry has been recognised by this prestigious award. It reflects the excellent progress the company is making towards its objective of world leadership in the ceramic supplies business."
