Johnson Matthey believes that sustainability is inclusive:
we have a strong tradition of good community relations
and the company and our employees are actively involved
in programmes worldwide. We have an important contribution
to make to the economic development of our local communities,
not only as an employer but also through collaboration and
investment, both financial and in kind.
Nearly all of our larger operations participate in activities
in their communities – giving to local charities and supporting
educational projects, as well getting involved in projects
to advance science or stimulate economic regeneration. Many
of our larger sites allocate a budget to community investment
activities. Our employees also participate in community
activities outside work. We support them in this broader
community engagement and allow them time off where this
is appropriate.
Examples of our community investment initiatives are presented as case studies on our website and in our Sustainability Reports.

We want to develop best practice in our community investment
programmes around the world and are a member of the London
Benchmarking Group, a group of more than 120 major companies
who develop and share best practice in this area.
We aim to be a good corporate neighbour. If we are building
a new facility on a Johnson Matthey site, we liaise with
the local community to try to minimise the impact of the
building works. If we have to close down a business, we
work with the community to lessen the impact of our departure
and help affected employees.
Johnson Matthey has a long history of support for charitable
causes – some of them close to the company’s areas of interest,
others proposed by employees. Every August we adopt a charity
for a 12 month period or longer and our charity partner becomes
the object of staff support and fundraising. Recent charity
partners include British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s
Society, The
International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and
EveryChild.

We also have a corporate donations programme, with the
main areas of giving to medical / health and social welfare
programmes. We also support science education activities
and programmes – encouraging the next generation of scientists
is important to the sustainability of our industry.
We welcome applications throughout the year for our Charity
of the Year programme and requests from charities for funding
to support specific initiatives. Please contact
us for further information.
