Every year on 18th July people all over South Africa dedicate 67 minutes of their time to volunteering in their local community to honour Nelson Mandela day - and our Johnson Matthey site in Germiston is no exception...
Nelson Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for freedom, social justice and equal rights for all South Africans. Every year on Nelson Mandela's birthday (18th July), all South Africans are called to contribute 67 minutes of their time to community service. The campaign is designed to honour Mandela's legacy of devotion and service to others.
This year our Germiston employees will take part in Mandela day by spending time with the elderly residents of a local old age home. They have also been collecting toiletries which will be donated to the home.
Johnson Matthey employees at the Germiston site have played their part before in celebrating Mandela Day on 18th July 2011. They donated children's clothing to a nursery that lies opposite the manufacturing facility. Canteen staff prepared a special meal for the children and nursery staff. All this was done in their own time, as part of their wider community activities.
The sense of corporate citizenship runs deep at the Germiston site, which has a strong ethos of support for employees and the local community. Giving is not restricted to special events like Mandela Day, and over the past year, employees have been bringing in clothing, school supplies and children's toys on a regular basis. Items are sorted and stored by age group, and when the site is approached by local charities, they are in the position of being able to make an immediate donation.
The site has also started a programme allowing employees' children eight hours of work experience to help them to make informed choices when the time comes for them choose their careers. In June this year 30 high school students between the ages of 16-18 were given a tour and an insight into a career in Johnson Matthey. This is all part of the site's ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, and it continues to plan ahead for future social sustainability activities.
