For the past three years, Johnson Matthey has been supporting Book Aid International, a charity that increases access to books and supports literacy, education and development in sub-Saharan Africa.
We have been working with Book Aid since 1992 and over the years have donated over £25,000.
From 2011 to 2013 inclusive, our funds (£6,000) were focused on sending new books to partners across sub-Saharan South Africa. This involved:
• Sorting and selecting donating books. Trained librarians in the charity's warehouse ensure books sent to partners are relevant and useful
• Stamping, packing and shipping books to Partners in sub-Saharan Africa
• Distributing books to public and community libraries, schools, colleges, refugee camps and hospitals in 12 countries.
Support from JM enabled Book Aid to send over 3,000 books, worth an estimated £33,000, to sub-Saharan Africa over a three year period.
The charity estimates that five people will read each book meaning over 15,000 people have benefited from a book funded by JM. This has a long term impact on education, literacy and community development.
